Marijuana legalization is one of the most contentious topics today

The Green Orbit supports the ‘Green’ Medicine Revolution
Several states in the United States have legalized marijuana in recent years, either for medicinal use, recreational use, or both. But possession, sale, or use of the drug still is considered a crime at the federal level and in most states. These are the arguments in favor of legalization. Recent research reports a majority of Americans to support legalizing marijuana for medical or recreational use. As such, many states have legalized marijuana for either medical and recreational purposes or both.
Marijuana is perhaps one of the most contentious topics today, both from a legal and health perspective. Why must it be legalized?

A Social Perspective

Enforcement is Prohibitively Expensive In 2005, Milton Friedman and a group of over 500 other economists advocated for marijuana legalization because prohibition directly costs more than $7.7 billion per year.
Enforcement is Unnecessarily Cruel You don’t have to look very hard to find examples of lives needlessly destroyed by marijuana prohibition laws. The government arrests about 700,000 Americans—more than Wyoming’s population—for marijuana possession every year. These new “convicts” are driven from their jobs and families and pushed into a prison system that turns first-time offenders into hardened criminals.

Impedes Criminal Justice GoalsJust as alcohol prohibition essentially created the American Mafia, marijuana prohibition has created an underground economy where crimes unrelated to marijuana and people who sell and use it go unreported. Result: Real crimes become harder to solve.

What are the benefits of marijuana?

Currently, there are two synthetic versions of marijuanaTrusted Source. Doctors prescribe them for the treatment of severe epilepsy and chemotherapy side effects.  The following list of marijuana benefits is some of the most commonly discussed in scientific research. The cannabinoids in marijuana may reduce pain by altering pain perception pathways in the brain. This may be helpful to treat conditions that cause chronic pain, such as:

1. arthritis
2. fibromyalgia
3. endometriosis
4. migraine

It may also minimize cancer treatment side effects, like loss of appetite. In some instances, medical marijuana is reported to help replace the long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, which can have adverse side effects.
Reduced inflammation CBD in marijuana is thought to help reduce inflammation. In theory, this may benefit inflammatory conditions, such as:

1. Crohn’s disease
2. irritable bowel syndrome
3. rheumatoid arthritis

Decreasing inflammation in the body can also improve overall health.
Neurological and mental disorders Due to its effects on the limbic system, doctors sometimes prescribe marijuana to treat the following neurological and mental health conditions:

1. anxiety
2. epilepsy
3. multiple sclerosis
4. Parkinson’s disease
5. post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
6. Tourette syndrome

Sleep management The relaxing effects of marijuana may help improve sleep disorders, such as insomnia. And improved sleep may also occur when pain is reduced from marijuana usage
